How to Keep Your Dodge Ram 2500/3500 From Steering/Wandering (Also Refered to As "Death Wobble")

ItemTitle

If you're the owner of any Dodge HD truck and haven't had any issues related to the front end suspension and/or steering, you're either oblivious to it, or you've managed to find a one in a million truck. Since the release of the EXTREMELY popular 1994 Dodge Ram through the current generation of Rams, there have always been woes on the integrity, and many times the safety of these trucks in regards to the front end. Typically, the 1994-2002 (called the 2nd Generation Rams) mostly had issues stemming from premature failure of the steering gear boxes, causing an extremely loose feeling that would work its way down through all of the tie rods and ball joints. Most drivers would explain this looseness as "driving Miss Daisy" in which you're driving down the road and constantly correcting the steering because of having to over steer the truck. On top of this, most notice an extreme harshness when hitting pot holes, speed bumps, etc. that can be felt through the steering wheel. In extreme cases of these trucks, many will experience an occurrence commonly known as Death Wobble (we'll talk about this later in the write up).

Spinning Out of Control in a Car

ItemTitle

If you have ever been in a car that was spinning out of control, you know how terrifying an event it can be. The driver becomes unable to control the car's trajectory and the vehicle may careen across multiple lanes of busy traffic, leaving it vulnerable to hitting other cars, medians, or other obstacles. The fact that spins usually occur at high speeds only adds to their dangerous nature. Knowing the causes of spins can help drivers avoid situations that can lead to losing control of their vehicles.

The AR.Drone is an electric RC helicopter equipped with two built-in video cameras and you actually fly it using your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, allowing you to watch the live video feeds coming straight from the helicopter itself. Yes... totally cool!

The AR Drone Electric Remote Control Helicopter With An On-Board Video Camera - Fun For All Ages

I recently just saw this toy at Brookstone, which is the only "brick-n-mortar" retailer that sells this product. This remote control helicopter is actually referred to as a "Quadricopter" because it is powered with four motor propellers. The AR.Drone combines many of today's latest technologies, bringing you a fun high-tech toy in the genres of remote control, modeling, video gaming and augmented reality.

The AR Drone Electric Remote Control Helicopter With An On-Board Video Camera - Fun For All Ages

While it would seem "challenging" to control and fly, the AR.Drone has several technologies and sensors in place to make the flying experience easy and fun! Since you use your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad device to control it, steering the helicopter is done by simply tilting your device left and right, and then controlling the motion through on-screen buttons. And with the two cameras on-board, you can visually see the live video feed on your Apple device, while you are controlling and flying the Quadricopter.

The AR.Drone works well indoors and outdoors. When flying it inside, it comes with a protective "shield" referred to as a "hull", in case you bump into anything inside the house. In a more open field outdoors, you can take the full hull off. It is powered with a lithium-ion battery that should last about 20 minutes of flying time, so you may want to consider buying an extra battery. And the "remote control" part is actually done through a Wi-Fi connection between your iPhone/Touch/iPad and the AR.Drone.

In addition to just having fun flying the AR.Drone and watching the video feeds, you can also play a variety of games with it, using compatible applications from the iTunes store for the AR.Drone. Not only will the kids love it, but this is definitely a toy that will bring out the kid in everyone.

A Dodge steering stabilizer essentially acts as a buffer or shock absorber for your steering box. It mitigates many of the more subtle movements of your steering system, keeping things aligned and keeping the steering wheel steady in your hands. The result is that in the traditionally loose-handling Dodge trucks, your steering will feel considerably more tight, leading to being able to better control your vehicle and get more out of it for whatever job you need your truck for.

Steering stabilizers are available from a number of companies, such as Custom Diesel, Inc. They are affordable, with the Custom Diesel price at 9 and are very easy to install. The following is the instruction manual that comes with the Custom Diesel, Inc steering stabilizer kit:

How to Keep Your Dodge Ram 2500/3500 From Steering/Wandering (Also Refered to As "Death Wobble")

1. REMOVE PITMAN ARM RETAINING NUT & LOCK WASHER, 1 5/16" SOCKET OR WRENCH REQUIRED.

2. INSTALL NEW PITMAN ARM RETAINING NUT & LOCK WASHER, TORQUE TO 185 FT. LBS.

3. REMOVE SWAYBAR BUSHING MOUNT BOLTS, 15MM SOCKET REQUIRED. DROP SWAYBAR DOWN AND LOOSEN SWAYBAR LINK NUT. THIS WILL MAKE INSTALL EASIER. BACK OFF UNTIL NUTS ARE FLUSH WITH THE ENDS OF THREADS.

4. TAKE STEERING BRACE, SLIDE IT AROUND SWAYBAR AND PUSH EVERYTHING TOGETHER BACK UP AGAINST THE FRAME, WHILE GUIDING THE NEW SECTOR NUT/PITMAN ARM NUT THOUGH THE HOLE IN THE BRACE FLANGE.

5. REPLACE SWAYBAR BOLTS, BUT LEAVE THEM LOOSE TO ADJUST BAR AFTER SECTOR SHAFT BEARING HAS BEEN INSTALLED.

6. INSTALL SECTOR SHAFT BEARING, IT IS A TIGHT FIT, YOU MAY NEED TO USE A SOFT FACE HAMMER TO HELP SLIDE IT ONTO THE SHAFT.

7. ONCE BEARING IS IN PLACE, INSTALL THE 7/16" -14 BOLTS WITH FLAT WASHERS ON BOTH SIDES AND NYLOCK NUTS, TORQUE TO 60 FT. LBS.

8. TIGHTEN ALL SWAYBAR BOLTS WHILE MAKING SURE THE BEAR-ING DOESN'T BIND ON SECTOR SHAFT.

9. TIGHTEN SET SCREWS ON SECTOR SHAFT BEARING AND GREASE BEARING

As you can see the installation is easy and straight forward.

Don't continue to suffer. Install a steering stabilizer on your Ram truck today!

Hydroplaning is probably the most common cause of car spins. A car hydroplanes when a thin layer of water develops between a car's tires and the road. The result is a serious loss of traction that causes the vehicle to be unresponsive to control inputs like steering or braking. A number of factors contribute to the likelihood that a vehicle will hydroplane on a wet surface, including speed, depth of water, and tire condition.

Steering Control

Spinning Out of Control in a Car

Tire blowouts can also cause a car to spin out of control. When the tire pops, it violently alters the vehicle's trajectory, which can induce a spin. This is particularly true at high speeds or when turning. Tires can blowout for a number of reasons, including manufacturer defects, improper inflation, or worn tread.

Spinning Out of Control in a Car

Another potential cause of a vehicle spin is a defective road. Potholes or uneven lanes can cause a car to become unstable and throw it into a spin. Other road defects can also cause a driver to lose control, albeit in less obvious ways. For example, a person might have to swerve sharply to avoid an improperly marked construction zone and end up spinning as a result.

Although it probably goes without saying, a collision with another vehicle can result in one or both drivers spinning out of control. Even if a car barely strikes your vehicle with a glancing blow, it may be enough to start a serious and possibly fatal spin. Collisions on highways are particularly dangerous in this respect.

Regardless of the cause, if your vehicle starts to spin, you should try to remain calm, avoid jerking the wheel or slamming on the breaks, and steer into the spin to try to regain control as quickly as possible. If you suffer damages or injuries due to a spin and believe that it may have been caused by some sort of road or manufacturer defect or a negligent driver, you may be entitled to compensation.
